This is all done with a roller, maybe a brush here and there and markers but mostly it's done with spray cans.  Spray cans!  Check out the precision, the attention to detail.  Look at the color combos, the shading, the fades, the high and low lights. This is skill, Baby! This is talent, knowledge, style, craft, design, constant practice and undeniable passion. This is art.  Ok, so it's illegal.  It's still art. You don't have to like it or even approve of it but you do have to acknowledge it.  Appreciate.  Respect.  Catch it while you can for it won't be there long.

By the way, the artwork you see posted above?  Completely hidden.  Yet millions drive right by every single day without a clue that it even exists.  Thanks Boys.  So very happy I got to spend time with your work.  Long may it ride.

Just the little Nikon Coolpix S6100 but, oh baby, it is so SHARP! Loving! Playing with it. Did I say LOVING??  I took her out on my usual hike in the back 40 and am so impressed by the quality of this little point-and-shoot.  Now I wanna upgrade all my gear.

Hold Up There Bandit

It's been a good week for street art in SC.  These Indians have been appearing all over downtown in various incarnations and colors.  This guy rocked up just as I was taking pix of The Bandit Indian. He introduced himself as the Graffiti Removal Dude of San Clemente. Seriously, he did! I asked if he knew the name of the artist and he said he didn't but said there had been a lot of large pieces in town lately.

"Oh really?" said I, innocently, "Like what?"

"Ohhh..." said Graffiti Removal Dude, "You know, Indians, Octopuses, that sort of thing."

I laughed and said 'Yup! Well dude, you really got your work cut out for you tonight."

He asked if I knew of any others on the street and I said ya but if I told him I'd hafta kill him. He laughed and said he only removes that which has been reported anyway.  Once Dude started to explain his graf removal techniques I kinda glazed over and went back to snapping pix. This one is the best IMHO cuz his shadow kinda makes it look like The Bandit is peeing on him as he works!

I love that people are calling, texting and facebooking me now when they see local street art.  This week I've been all over town from the main street to under the freeway.  I only posted a few treasures here on the blog but you can see lots more on my flickr.  ❤

UPDATE:  The On/Off pic has been used here: Counseling Resource, for an article titled "On Again, Off Again Relationship — Fear of Intimacy?"  See my thoughts on it here.

Toxic
Love this one for so many reasons. Spotted on a trash can that smelled like poo on the path to Trestles. Yup, I squatted down right there next to it to snap the pic on my phone. See what I do for you people?!?  Lots of info in this sticker: DBE (or OBE) in the R. bottom corner, BEY (or REY) on the cufflink which I imagine is formal initials, the number 74 on the patch.... Fill me in if you know what it all means. Learn me up, please.

I have a thing for graffiti...

I love graffiti.  I've always been stopped in my tracks by it but am just recently learning more about street art thanks to Juxtapoz and a vast amount of time on the internet.  I just watched Banksy's "Exit Through the Gift Shop".  Twice.  I need to conversate with someone about it.  Is this for real?

Somewhere there are some pix that Dad took of me and Janey when I was about 16 by a beautifully tagged wall we found in the city.  I was wearing an old army jacket that I'd covered with pins and sparkles (very 80s) and had freakin horrid hair (very VERY 80s).  You remember that look doncha?  I'd love to take another, more slightly educated look at that wall now.  I'll try to dig those up for a laugh.

These two pix were taken on one of my favorite walks.  Specifically under the freeway bridge along the way to Trestles.  There is tons and tons more graffiti there but I have to figure out how to get to it. Stay tuned...
